Medal Of Honor: Airborne

AT A GLANCE

"Another WWII FPS, but one with potential."
The Good: Parachuting elements sound fun and original...

The Bad: ...but the rest sounds fairly formulaic.

The Ugly: Landing right in the middle of an enemy camp.

The Medal of Honor series has been around for years now, and has seen releases across nearly every current gaming platform. This time around, though, you won’t necessarily be stranded in trenches along the enemy line. As a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, you’ll be constantly parachuting down behind enemy lines and bringing the fight to them. Floating down from the sky will actually be a controllable experience, and this ability to determine your own starting point dramatically changes the way each mission plays out. You can view your operation from the air, and then control your parachute to choose your landing spot.

Once you hit the ground, of course, it’ll be a completely different story. Airborne will present the player with a series of huge, free-roaming levels to be navigated. This should come as a nice change to the often on-rails feel of many WWII shooters -- assuming the development team can pull it off.

Combined with an updated graphics engine and “intense, cinematic” gameplay, this latest addition to the Medal of Honor series looks promising, especially for those who aren’t sick of WWII first person shooters yet. While the ground elements don’t sound particularly innovative, the fact that you can choose to land practically anywhere in a level sounds intriguing. Another promising aspect is the fact that the PC, PS3, and 360 versions are being developed by a separate team to the current-gen versions, which hopefully means the newer consoles can actually be put to some good use.

Expect to see Medal of Honor Airborne land on these shores around mid-November, in time for the PS3 launch. Keep it locked to NZGamer for a full review around then!
