Crackdown

AT A GLANCE

"Provides enough to keep the formula fresh."
The Good: You can throw people, trashcans, and cars.

The Bad: Sandbox game-play is getting a little old, isn't it?

The Ugly: The bill for the clean-up crew!

Crackdown is a GTA clone with a difference: you can throw cars! There’s more to it than that, obviously, but the ability to cause mayhem thanks to your superhuman powers is a welcome addition to a stale formula.

For those of you that aren’t sick of the GTA sandbox formula, you’ll be pleased to know that in Crackdown you can still steal cars, run over pedestrians, and generally cause mayhem – car throwing included.

However, there will be added layers of depth thanks to your superhuman abilities. These have been granted to you by an organisation known as the Agency. The police force has failed to keep the streets clean, so you have been commissioned with taking out 21 crime overlords who control the city.

In a neat twist, the order you take out the kingpins will directly affect the game. So, for example, if you take out the overlord in charge of weapons, you will find that the enemies in the game are no longer as well armed as they were.

The game also boasts an unprecedented level of freedom, allowing everything to be dictated by the player. So whether you want to stop crimes or commit them, it’s your choice. And it promises to include a co-operative mode, which is sure to be a blast!

With an array of impressive game-play features added to the GTA sandbox formula, Crackdown looks set to be another winning title for the Xbox 360. Those looking for something to tide them over between Saints Row and GTA IV will want to keep their eyes peeled for a full review of Crackdown here on NZGamer in the future.
