In a generation where the other consoles are aiming for the highest resolutions with detailed graphics, the Wii is at a clear disadvantage, forcing developers to either make ‘last gen’ looking ports or take the art in different directions. Games like No More Heroes and Okami highlight the virtues of different approaches.
Now Madworld is joining the club to avoid being banned for its supposed “ultra-violence”. The visuals are grayscale monochrome with only the blood coloured red. Although this is an interesting art style, the level design will have to cater to the art style or it could end up looking like a mess if the screen gets too cluttered.
In the story players will take the role of Jack in a twisted and violent game called Death Watch. The game was created by a group of terrorists called The Organizers and is tagged as a collection of ultra-violent …mini-games designed to push you over the edge – and probably throw your Wii Remote at the TV in frustration.
As Jack, players will fight through the mini-games and find out the story and secrets behind Death Watch and deal with the terrorists. There are several ways to finish off the opponents including ripping their heart out and crushing it, shoving a sign post through their head, and impaling them on spikes. As you fight through the game Madworld will feature commentary from the Organizers with black-humored jokes.
Madworld is looking to be one of the more original titles in visual style and violence on Wii. At the time of writing it’s slated for release early 2009. Keep it locked on for further news on this title closer to release.
