Don't miss out on these blogs!
Welcome to the third instalment of our Best of the Blogs feature, where we play catch-up on the best of the previous week's blogs. This past week saw quite a few interesting, insightful and funny blogs posted as well as a ton of discussion around said blogs. Check out this week’s inclusions to the blogging hall of fame below and be sure to keep those quality blogs coming!
Blog #3: Whoopsie whoopsie boingo knickers! by ChatterboxZombie
Locking down the third spot is Chatterboxzombie (again!) with a tribute to a fine reviewer and example of why the internet is great, Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw. Readers of this blog will be treated to an explaination of why Yahtzee is awesome as well as multiple quotes from a selection of his reviews which, in my humble opinion, are some of the best I’ve seen - even if the average review is filled to the brim with pessimism.
Apparently neither Chattboxzombie nor myself are alone in our adoration of Yahtzee as seen in the comments section.
”Those have to be some of the best similes ever written.” writes Trigun
”I love me some Yatzee. Even when he rips on some of my fave games. Although, he enjoyed Bioshock...fundamentally broken and all.” from Ubercuber
”He's great. He takes what not good about a game. Good to hear it eh?” from Ruptunex
Blog #2: Music that means something by Dogonabus
With his blog, Sam 3.0 takes a close look at the link between music and video games. Inspired by a recent purchase of a ‘Making of’ Metallica doco and a blog post from Simon Sweetman linking music and movies, Sam 3.0 takes us on a journey through his gaming past and how Metallica tracks have become an ingrained part of it. This blog is sure to resonate with a lot of gamers who go through the same sort of game-related music nostalgia and is well worth the read.
There was a mix of Metallica love and debate over the awesomeness of Sam 3.0’s account name in the comments section, the following are a few examples.
i found the guitar heros have influenced my taste in music quite a bit! introduced me to megadave, plus i find the odd gh track popping up on my ipod - even gh:80s songs! from stupidlikeafox
Go Load and Reload! I realise I'll be in a minority here, but those two albums are some of my favourite Metallica ones. Many more interesting melodies (particularly with Load) in my opinion. from McPhisto
The reverse thing kinda happened for me too. The first Metallica album I heard and bought was Reload, after that I went on to buy their back catalog. When I got around to listening to the Master of Puppets album and heard Damage inc. I remembered hearing it when I was younger, probably on the radio when it first came out. Metallica are good for gaming music.
Ain't My b*tch would be a good song for Killer Instinct Gold! by Munkah
Blog #1: Going on Strike by Windmill
In this lengthy blog, Windmill explores a number of topics such as the shortcomings of licensed games, rehashing of sports games and a rant on the upcoming Animal Crossing title to name a few. Summarizing the entire blog in one paragraph isn’t possible - it touches on a lot of different points relevant to the games industry like game sales, licensed games, the rehashing of sports titles and the upcoming Animal Crossing title.
If you’re interested in the industry as a whole (which you probably are if you’re reading this) it’s worth your time to check this blog out. It definitely sparked a lot of discussion in the comments with posts that could stand as separate blog entries, here are just a few examples.
”I do think u have to take into account the number of idiots there are in the world. And your right it is bout profit it costs 90 million to make a blockbuster game these days, at least. Much cheaper to take a game thats paid for itself spend pocket change on it and make 200% profit. Profit is tasty.” by pantomimechicken
”Can't agree more, however I must admit my fingers are twitching at the prospect of Fifa 09, I already own Fifa 08 maybe 5 of the previous iterations” from Rapidity
That brings us to a close for this week’s Best of the Blogs. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on this week's entries feel free to let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for next week’s blog re-cap.
