Resident Evil 4

AT A GLANCE

"Turn off the lights and grab a torch and a blanky, the evilest of..."
The Good: The best Resident Evil yet, now on PlayStation 2 with a few new features

The Bad: Although it may not look quite as sharp as on the Cube in some places.

The Ugly: The controls will still annoy some gamers.

Resident Evil 4 has been hailed by many as being the best game available for the GameCube as well as the best game yet in the Resident Evil series. PlayStation 2 owners have been kept in the dark for a while but can now step into the light as the game will soon be appearing on Sony's console.

Resident Evil 4 differed from other games in the series by being the most up close and personal, in your face outing yet. Because of the over the shoulder camera angle, you feel a lot more involved in the game. The environments are also more interactive than past games with context sensitive areas. For example, being able to shoot at a torch on the wall thus setting those annoying zombies on fire.

Ever since the game was first announced for the PlayStation 2, a lot of gamers have been pretty negative about the port. In part because the game was supposed to be a GameCube exclusive, leaving Cube fans feeling sold out and also in part to people not believing that the PlayStation 2 would be able to cope with the game. From the footage released so far, it's actually hard to tell the difference between the two versions and judgment will have to be reserved until we get to see both games running side by side. Then again, if you have to run them side by side to tell the difference, Capcom have done a pretty darn good job. Whilst we don't expect the PlayStation 2 game to quite look as sharp as the GameCube game, we are hoping that the differences will be minimal.

Further good news for PlayStation owners is that there will be a few gameplay tweaks and even a new weapon to play around with. The PlayStation 2 version even has a proper anamorphic 16:9 mode unlike the GameCube's widescreen mode and features progressive scan Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound.

Capcom are bringing one of the best games of this generation to the masses with its release on the PlayStation 2. Ignore what the fanboys are saying, this port looks to be polished and looks likely to live up to the fantastic GameCube version of the game.
