Don't miss out on these blogs!
Welcome to the ninth instalment of our Best of the Blogs feature, where we play catch-up on the best of the previous week's blogs. The blog count was a little low this week (five blogs from four users), so a completely straight-faced top three would be a little silly. Check out the top blogs below and start cranking out more blogs for next week!
Blog #3: Getting published by Donutta
Our third blog this week comes from Donutta and serves as a follow up to his blog earlier in the week announcing the completion of his novel (congratulations by the way, huge achievement). This blog briefly touches on the process behind getting your book published and provides a link to Liam’s website where the novella in question is available in .pdf format for anyone that wants to check it out.
Check out what some examples from the comments below
”Will have to check it out sometime. Again congrats on the milestone and all the best for vol 2.” from Wozza
”will definitely give it a read this holidays.” from xSHADOWx
Blog #2: RB vs. GH:WT by stupidlikeafox
Second up is a blog from veteran blogger stupidlikeafox that seeks to answer one of life’s more difficult questions, Rock Band or Guitar Hero: World Tour? Mr. Likeafox has a track record for producing well written and humorous blogs and this latest entry is no exception. With the pro’s and con’s of both titles, a track list comparison and a reference to the Fonz; if you were wrestling with the problem of which bundle to pick up, reading this blog may just help you make the right call.
Here’s a snippet from the comments.
”Im with you in that GHWT drums look better and it is actually here on time. But to be honest I wont be using the song creator at all. "creating" music is not a high priority of mine with fisher price toys. Have fun there creating all those megadeth songs.
All being said I will get GHWT as the peripherals are backwards compatible with RB (and and it has tool) so I can just use the RB disc and go to work downloading some good stuff. If im gonna shell out for a drum kit ima make sure it will ask. And by the looks of it GHWT will” from thejuror84
Blog #1: QTEs, WTF? by Julio-Hyksos
Top spot this week is Julio-Hyksos with an intelligent write-up on the history and current implementation of Quick Time Events in games. From their modern roots with Shenmue to some recent and future appearances with titles like Spider Man 3, God of War (pick one) and Heavy Rain, Julio raises some interesting questions on the design principles and shortcomings of including QTEs in action games.
Interesting and recommended read, check out what some readers thought below.
” QTEs are horrible! Even Tomonobu Itagaki opposes them. The only ones I find acceptable are really short ones - easier to remember. But a lot of them just make games unplayable for me, such as the many QTEs in the God of War series. Viking had them too, but they were reasonably short and didn't hurt the gameplay too much.” by Munkah
” It is interesting that you say it comes at the cost of immersion - because the alternative is a cut scene you have no control over, which usually isn't terribly immersing at all. In fact, quite a few players end up wondering "why can't I do any of that?"” from Lifeforce
” i like them as brief change in gameplay as a reward for doing hard work on bosses and you can just do one or 2 inputs to finish them off.
when they try to make them difficult it's balls.” from Stungaf
That brings us to a close for this week’s Best of the Blogs. Be sure to check out all of the above blogs and start writing your own. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on this week’s entry feel free to let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for next week’s blog re-cap.
