To start off with, here’s a quick recap of what we covered in the last preview: players will resume the role of BJ Blazkowicz, Raven Software is handling its development, and it’s confirmed for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Over the years, developers Raven have handled a number of high profile titles for Id Software, including the popular Heretic and Hexen titles, and most recently Quake 4. The latter will have made this a lot easier to get started on as it uses that engine: ID Tech 4.
In the off chance you haven’t heard of Wolfenstein, this an old series, so old the original fits on a single floppy disk. Now you might be asking “can such an old series compete with the current crop of World War 2 shooters?” Wolfenstein isn’t your typical WW2 shooter, however - it does things none of the others have tried. It’s a series that has tackled strange Nazi experiments; brought fictional guns into the WW2 formula; turned Hitler into an armoured tyrant with four gatling guns; and sent leather-clad women in to kill you.
This time around the Nazis have harnessed a force known as Black Sun to create the Veil Heavy Trooper – the earliest use of the Black Sun, The Despoiled - SS troopers resurrected by the Elite Guards via a revitalization process. Lastly, the Elite Guard are back from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and BJ will also have to deal with regular SS troopers.
Fortunately, BJ is armed to the teeth with an assortment of heavy weapons - not that he needs them – whereas before he didn’t even have a rocket launcher to take out Hitler with in the original Wolfenstein. Since then, times have changed - these days he packs new, more explosive, weapons.
On the surface the arsenal doesn’t stand out from any other FPS - BJ will have the genre-standard automatics and shotguns. But on top of those, trailers have exposed interesting new toys such as the Particle Cannon, which will vaporize Nazis in the blink of an eye, and a flame thrower. The latter featured in Gray Matter’s Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which had one of the best - Raven will have a lot to live up to with theirs.
Wolfenstein looks set to continue the series’ fine tradition of not being your ordinary charge and shoot World War 2 shooter. You’re all alone this time soldier! Make us proud, or die trying.
