Call of Duty: World at War: Hands On

AT A GLANCE

"We're heading back to WWII."
The Good: World at War still looks set to offer some new gameplay.

The Bad: Some people are skeptical with Infinity Ward no longer involved.

The Ugly: There's not a lot pretty about war.

NZGamer was fortunate enough to attend Activate ’08 – a three day over-view of Activision / Blizzard’s gaming titles set for launch leading up to Xmas. This is what we saw...

Despite the massive success of the fourth title, Modern Warfare – this latest installment takes us back to the WWII settings of earlier Call of Duty titles. Although many will think the series is starting to repeat itself, World at War still looks set to offer some new gameplay.

Built on the Modern Warfare engine, the game is one of the most realistically gritty, action-packed games in the franchise to date. Also for the first time in a Call of Duty game, the story concentrates in a setting a lot closer to home – the Pacific region. Almost immediately into the game, players will find themselves in lush Burmese jungles being ambushed by ruthless Japanese Banzai soldiers.

We also got to see the highly anticipated flamethrower in action too. With it trees, grass and structures can all be ignited – not too mention enemies and your own team-mates. World at War includes a four player co-operative mode with a system link or via Xbox Live, on top of the usual multiplayer modes from Modern Warfare.

Some people are skeptical with World at War – partly due to the ‘backwards’ setting of the WWII era and also the fact that Infinity Ward are no longer involved (Treyarch have regained development for this title). But even those gamers who think they are over the WWII genre should check out this game in action for themselves.

Apparently flamethrowers are big in this one
in the island hopping battles the americans learnt after some heavy losses that the best way to route out the japs who were well entrenched was the use of flame throwers
