The Debate Over Console FPS...

Published: Sat 19 Jul, 2008 | 16 Comments
Tags: FPS PC XBOX 360

There has long been debate over this what is better a console FPS such as (Half-Life 2 on Original) Vs PC FPS (Half-Life 2).

With a FPS on a console you use the controller now to aim and move around and use triggers to show but with the FPS on PC you can use a  mouse which i personally think its easier to precision aim on someones head (for an awsum kill btw) and use the keyboard to move around and i feel like i have more freedom like that.

With Half Life 2 on the original xbox there was a bad framerate because the console didnt seem to be able to handle the game that well so it was laggy and unplayable.

On the overhand i played it on my PC which has pretty good specs i played it lag free (except when i blew up heaps of explosives and grenades in one spot) and got through the whole game with a quite enjoyable few hours.

Although this might not be the same case now with the new pc games which have more demanding specs then what older games did competing with the awsum power of the xbox 360 but overall i personally think that PC FPS shooters are my favo to play but i might not be able to play them for much longer because i would have to upgrade my computer each month but thank god i have the 360.

PC may have better aiming but you can't easily run around in a circle 20 times.

Also from the point of view of someone who doesn't play FPSs that much PC seems an easier learning curve I always found. When I played games like Perfect Dark or Time Bandets on one of my mates consols years ago (N64 and... PS2 maybe? no actually game cube probably) I found the aiming very awkward.
But having said this, what about the Wii remote? I I suppose it kinda blurs the line a bit, not a mouse but certainly not a horrible little analoge stick ha ;D Maybe presents the same kind of learning curve for both 'traditional' consol and pc gamers alike? I don't really know not being a consol gamer myself.

Anyway its an interesting quetion you pose, two thumbs skyward.

Surely you can't prove whole genres play better on different mediums because one game ported badly to the Xbox? and does no one believe in the capital I anymore?

The best FPS's on consoles are ones that are designed with consoles in mind originally IMO.

I don't personally play PC FPS, I have tried some internet ones and didn't have much luck. I guess i'm just too use to playing on a console. That and our computer is the laggiest thing you would ever meet.

In the end it comes down to the porting process for PC originals and the design process for console originals. Quite a few games these days have a quick snap feature that help new players to play by snapping onto an enemy when your close. This certainly made it easier for me to get used to consoles. And its also great to get a game home and have it look like the screenshots on the box.

Console FPS > PC everything

^kinda agree. with consoles you dont have to upgrade each time a new game comes out...

and why are you comparing computers to the *original* xbox? doesnt that make your argument a little dated?

I disagree with you. HL2 on the original xbox was far from unplayable.
Yes the framerate chugged at times, but I still had a blast!
I'm with you on the pc upgrade side of things though. Which is why I switched a few years back to console gaming. :)

You don't have to upgrade everytime a new game comes out. My PC I got 1 year ago still runs everything at max on 1680x1050. I think we've hit a slow down in technology until the next big thing... 8-core cpu's and DDR3
