I was at work the other day...
[Okay, so that's probably the most boring way of starting a blog ever, but hey, it gets better, I assure you!]
And in my office, teams of colleagues have a team name and theme; ours just so happens to be "Transformers." We each chose a character to be our mascot, and did the workspace up in a robotic fashion.
While sitting at my desk (probably the least enthusiastically decorated workstation in my area) a revelation struck me.
Just how embraced and celebrated, the things that in by-gone time were labelled as "geeky" are, by "normal people".
Here were middle-aged business types, young party-animals and sport-jock people all blending in with the "geeky" types. All united under a common banner of "geek-dom."
(Some other teams included "Team Marvel" and "The Justice League")
Since my little moment of realization, I have noticed just how many every-day conversations I’ve over-heard that revolved around E3 announcements that the people are excited about or their favourite moments in various games.
It's amazing how, when I was a lot younger it was harder to find people who I could talk with, about gaming or "geeky" things, because I was supposedly "too cool" for them (that is to say, I didn't spend my lunch-times in the School library).
Now I almost feel like an outcast in certain "normal" social circles, because of my lack of an extensive Anime collection, or that I don't know how many points a regiment of Chaos warriors is worth in Warhammer.
I can't win either way!
It's as though the scale of "coolness" has reversed!
My ultimate attempts to "un-cool" myself by having the Autobot logo tattooed in the middle of my chest, desperately hoping that I’d be accepted by my be-spectacled, pasty gaming peers*, results only in comments like "Wow dude, that's so cool!"
From the hot, tanned girls that all my traditionally "cool" mates hang with.

*Just so you know, I didn't get the tattoo to impress anyone really! It was in honour of the ressurrection of my childhood favourite toys/programme. Nor do i think all gamers wear glasses...
