Actually this blog is not really about sex. Well sort of. I do mention it below. Anyway. Hello there. How are you? Are you ready to read? Ok let's get to it.
Last week I went over my gaming history. Today I'm going to write about violence and sex in videogames. These two topics always seem to be debated a lot in gaming forums, so here are my views about them (I also had some help with points and ideas for the blog by asking a few people what they though about the subjects).
So last week I was playing (the best game in the world) Mafia, and I was shooting at a car coming towards me that was going to run me over. Then just before it got to me, it blew up. I then walked over to the car and looked at the driver. He was completely burnt. He looked like a crispy deep fried potato chip. I remember the first time I saw this, I found it very disturbing. But now it's like "Ha that's cool". This kind of thing happens when ever I play a game that is violent. The first time I see it, I think it is shocking. I'm like "Whoa damn!" But then after seeing it a few times it's kind of "meh".
Sometimes I wonder if the game developers do take the level of violence too far. It seems to be a big part of gaming nowadays. Some developers even make the violence a selling point for the game.
For example, look at Gears of War 2. In the gameplay videos they are showing off all the new and improved ways of chainsawing enemies into pieces, or performing execution moves. Lost of blood and limbs flying everywhere. This game is not considered too bad though because it's more of a fantasy game, and there is some point to it i.e saving the world. But it's still pretty brutal.
I'm looking out for GoW2, should be pretty cool.
There is a certain point where I think it becomes too much. There is a line between depicting violence and glamorising it. Some games have crossed that line. Postal 2 and Manhunt are two examples. It's not so much the gore and violence. It is the way the game shows the violence, and the way developers make the violence seem appealing. This is why they are banned in New Zealand.
These sorts of games are meant to be for adults only. But that does not stop kids playing the games. If they want something bad enough they will find a way to get it. No one really knows for sure how these games are affecting the youth of today. Back when I was a kid I played Mortal Kombat and the original GTA. The games today have realistic graphics and there is so much more detail. However, you are still dealing with virtual characters in a virtual world.
I see reports in the news about people who commit crimes play certain video games. But I think to copy-cat violent crimes you see in a game means you already had some problems to begin with. The same sort of thing is happening with rap music. When ever there is a crime committed by a teenager who listened to rap music it's labelled as a "hip-hop murder" or something similar. These are just excuses used to sell news papers.
Sex in video games is really a whole other blog but I'll make a few comments on this topic. There seems to be a problem dealing with sex in a mature and realistic way in videogames. A lot of (mostly Asian) game developers have women shown with breasts that are so big they would make Hollywood's top plastic surgeon blush, and give them all kinds of breast physics. (I don't think I'll ever understand why they do this. Perhaps they are compensating for the petite figure Asian women generally have). But their target is 15 year old boys, so anything with BOOBIES in it will appeal to them. There are a few characters that are shown as strong independent women, but even they end up being sexy pin-up girls.

So do these games actually affect the way people think and act? I don't think it really make any sort of impact on the adults who these games are aimed at. However children are very impressionable. I remember when I was a kid and I was watching movies like the Terminator I'd go outside with my friends and go act out parts from the movie. When we played Street Fighter, after we would go out on the tramp and play fight. I knew that it was not real. I never thought of getting a baseball bat and swinging it at people after playing Streets of Rage. We just used our imagination. The imagination is pretty cool. Screw waiting for developers to make games you want. I already played Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe years ago. Have you?
Most of these games are for adults anyway so it's up to parents to watch what their children are playing and understand that games are no longer just for kids. Having said that I did let my girlfriend Misa Campo play Tomb Raider last week. Then she went around thinking she was Lara Croft for the rest of the day. Misa you so crazy...

There is nothing sexier than a fine as woman holding a gun
Aiiiight laters.
