The last good offline multiplayer shooter game?

Published: Wed 8 Oct, 2008 | 37 Comments

The last good offline multiplayer shooter game?

Since online play has really kicked off, we have seen a huge decrease in the number of games that have good, solid, enjoyable offline multiplayer modes. Long gone are the days when we could set up a few bots in a multiplayer map, each with their own skill levels and skins, and then take them out with a mate on split-screen.

This used to be one of my favourite modes... and i miss it.

The last game i can remember this is Medal Of Honour: Rising Sun on the Playstation 2. The single player was okay, the online would have been ok if i'd had my PS2 connected at the time, but the REAL fun for me on that game was the offline multiplayer.

I'd just love setting up a game in the Ballpark level, with what seemed like a huge number of bots thst had varying skill settings and weapon set ups. Then me and my mate would paly split screen against each other and the other bots on either deathmatch or team deathmatch games.

As simple as it sounds it was still really, really fun. I rste those experiences as high, if not higher than any COD4 online experience thst I've had.

You don't need to worry about ping times, lag or anything else to do with NZ's crappy internet - you just cranked on the system, set it up in a minute and played it resulting in 100% fun.

Now days games seem to put all their effort into online gaming, which is good; but what happens when you have 3 or 4 mates over and you want to all play together in a shooting game? Well you virtually have no options now on a next generation system. Cod:4 has a 4 person(i think)  multiplayer mdoe but thats just not as fun as having 4 people AND bots running around. Its possible for the technology to do it, i mean we're in the 21st century for god's sake, but still there is nothing offered to us.

Its an issue im hearing mroe and more of. At least Cod5 will give us co-op but its still not the same. Bring back the good old days!

Unreal III has bots and the 360 version has splitscreen.
Also, Perfect Dark Zero has pretty good offline

I think a little gem called Mashed is the best 'mates around a tv' game. It's like micromachines, but funner-rer-er.

Time splitters 2, I king of offline multiplayer.

Teamdeath match you and a friend against maxium bots.

One shot kill matches of throws bricks at each other ftw.

Perfect Dark is worth your time.

Koopa18ReplyPosted by Koopa18 on 9 October 2008, 09:14AM
I do that desert level on Assault mode. I dont like doing Team Deathmatch, because even though it has bases, their guys can appear right behind you when your in a turret, or something like that.

Shooter games, sure, but what about everything else? Did anyone ever play racing games against all their mates on split screen? It seems to be a feature left off all games now. Gran Turismo Prologue still has it, but that's only half a game with 7(?) tracks, so it gets boring quick.

I was looking forward to playing a few of my friends and my brother at Burnout Paradise, but no luck. Burnout against friends is great, but none of my friends own a PS3, or any console newer than the PS2 for that matter. So offline multiplayer is the only option, but no games seem to have it. Shame really.

Mario Kart.

But those bastards took out 2 player splitscreen Grand Prix >:(

And for PS2.. uh.. JAK X!

I reckon offline with mates is more fun then online with heaps of people

UbercuberReplyPosted by Ubercuber on 9 October 2008, 10:10AM
Agreed. Ive said it far too many times, but Offline multiplayer is what gaming is all about.

Thats why GHWT will be great.

Screw online.

And I agree, more racing games need offline MP. Burnout 3 etc was awesome fun.

I also have great memories of playing offline multiplayer with friends and bots.
I've heard that Killzone 2 will be offering this mode. Can anyone clarify?

The original Perfect Dark and Golden Eye for N64, and PS2 had the Timesplitters series. Xbox had the Halo's and Unreal Championship. These are the most memorable to me. Apart from the Quake games. Oh sweet Jesus yes.

Far Cry Instincts was an awesome game for multiplayer (4player split screen) I can't go past Halo 3 though, it's so fun when theres a group of friends multiplaying in the same room tossing insults around, ahh good times :P

Bioshock, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metroid Prime 3 etc... - I think there's still a pretty big market for single player FPS games.

Get a 360 and play Ghost Recon 2 or Rainbow Six.]

they're also on PS3.

do people still play ghost recon online?
that used to be my game, but cod4 took over when i couldn't get good connections, or find proper games - everyone just camped last time i played.

God Tier:
Time Splitters series
Halo series
Bond series
Crimson Skies
Bionic Commando: Rearmed
Rainbox Six series

@Oliver: Baja: Edge of Control is an offroad racing game with 4 player splitscreen coming out this month hopefully. I'm pretty sure it's a multiplatformer too. And it has some awesome sound engineering.
