Gamers are now well aware that the Call of Duty franchise is being turned into one of Activision's largest money spinners.
Modern Warfare 2's sales figures and strong critical reception have seen greater pressures put on the series two developers - Infinity Ward and Treyarch - to push more titles out at a faster rate.
It comes as no surprise then, that the LA Times is reporting that Activision is conducting an "aggressive expansion" of the franchise and are bringing a third developer in to work on a new addition to the Call of Duty Family.
At this stage the developer is not yet known. However, the ongoing success of Call of Duty's online play and the lucrative value of multi-player gaming have sparked rumours that the next iteration of the franchise will be an MMO or a monthly online content service.
The leap from one gaming genre to the MMO world is becoming more prevalent, and the money that can be made is not lost on Activision CEO Bobby Kotick:
"When you think about other properties that we own and control, like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetize that..."
So, kiwi gamers who are upset at the short length of the MW2 campaign or annoyed at frustrating mutliplayer quick matching, take heart. There may be an unending COD MMO Universe to sate your desires in the not too distant future.
