Feminists Hate On Fat Princess

You know, Fat Princess looks awesome. It's cute, full of charm, and just the kind of originality this industry is lacking. But not everyone sees that way. Oh no, indeed, feminist gamers are already starting to get their knickers in a twist express their displeasure about the upcoming game.

For those that don't know, Fat Princess involves players feeding food to a princess to fatten her up so she is too heavy for the other team to carry back -- and it seems this is where two authors have issue with the game.

Mighty Ponygirl over at Feminist Gamers writes: "[I]f I didn’t care one whit about the objectification of women or fat-bashing, I would think this was the best thing since… well, Team Fortress 2." However, she denounces the game as reinforcing "nasty stereotypes about women and the obese."

Quite tame, when you consider Melissa McEwan's outburst over at Shakesville.

"Anyway, congrats on your awesome new game, Sony. I'm positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative ***holes. It's not often I have the opportunity to congratulate a cutting-edge tech company on such splendiferous retro**** jackholery. Way to go! The Fat Princess of Shakes Manor salutes you."

And so it begins...

To be honest, I'm fat and a feminist, I don't see what the big deal is about. You're still rescuing the princess, no? It's not like she gets to a certain level and everyone just goes: "Ah, bugger it! The bitch is too fat now anyway, so who cares?" If it was, then I think there would be some leverage. However, I think these authors in general would probably be more wise to turn their attention to these classy games if they wanted to have a credible attack on how the video game industry portrays women.

So, what do you think about this situation? Tell us below, and remember to keep the comments clean and free of ad hominem attacks.

You may be fat and a feminist (sic), but you are male, and thus can never understand the plight of the oppressed wimin.

That said, go go Fat Princess!

But there are several other games out there that are far worse then Fat Princess. Why don't they moan and bitch about those ones?
UbercuberPosted by Ubercuber on 23 July 2008, 01:32PM
Most feminists are fat anyways. I would have thought they would enjoy seeing their likeness on screen.

I'd reply but we've been asked to keep the comments clean and free of ad hominem attacks... That said, feminists suck

I think the contention here is probably more along the lines of something *new* to complain about. Don't get me wrong - I see what they are getting at and to a point I agree with them. But I'm also going to play the game and not give a damn.
Things like Saints Row and Juiced 2 are almost same old. Barely clothed strippers who you can take on a date and leave in a car while you proceed to set it on fire. It's almost like we're so inured to the concept that people don't even notice anymore. But bring obesity into the mix and bad-a-bing: Instant Hostility.
I'm still going to play.

Why do people always whinge about the objectification of women?
What about the objectification of MEN?
When magazines like Cosmo and Cleo are generally the ones guilty of providing girls with the desire to be thin or attain an "ideal" figure - even though those publications are usually staffed by a majority of women.
My main gripe with people making a fuss about this game is that it is logical - it's not anti fatty or anti woman in the least! If you make something too heavy to be stolen then fair enough - it just so happens that the stealable thing is a princess (as is the case in many fairy-tales or games - which AREN'T targetted by petty feminists) and the best method of making her akward to steal is by feeding her cake and making her fat and heavy!
People need to lighten up! haha pardon the pun...

Fairy tales were targeted by feminists, until they cottoned on that not many people cared. I do see their point, for a given value of 'see'. But I'm also with you and Liam - there are other, worse, things for them to worry about!

I think the real message here is that even fat princesses are worth saving. What are they complaining about?
MunkahPosted by Munkah on 23 July 2008, 04:09PM
Don't they usually hate on impossibly thin game girls? We could always stop putting girls in games... XD

In all honesty, I love girls in games -- but I would love to see them less objectified. Samus was a great start (more on this in a minute), and to an extent you have The Chunster, Nariko, all holding down major parts in a game. Yet, at the same time, these strong females are still the object of desire. Lara became more famous for her boobs than her charm, wit, and intelligence. The Chunster might be the strongest women in the world, but it doesn't stop people from talking about her thighs. Nariko is wearing next to nothing. Even Samus gets into skimpy clothing as a "reward" for doing well in the Metroid games. What I would love to see is more females being represented how they are in Bioware's role-playing games. Mass Effect and KotOR were great examples of how to make strong women characters. More of this needs to be done. Women are easily as able to do what men do. I guess it shows why the video game industry still has a target population of 18-35 males...

Fat people complain all the time about how everyone ignores them and how no body pays them any attention. it looks like someone finally did them a favour and gave them the cak.., i mean attention they are so desperately seeking.
DonuttaPosted by Donutta on 23 July 2008, 05:48PM
Actually, as a fat person, it's not attention we want at all. In fact, what we want is to just be left alone. I know I'm sick of turning on the television and being bombarded with health Nazis telling me I should be thin. In 2003 I lost a shitload of weight -- proof here: http://jellyfilled.orconhosting.net.nz/art/after.jpg -- and I found that people treated me completely different even though I was the same person. We don't want attention, we don't want to be praised, we don't want to be told anything. All we want is to be able to be judged on our character, not our appearance. Martin Luther King Jr. once asked for the same thing...

angry feminists aye? feature women with unrealistic body types and they complain. now there isnt a sex bomb, and they complain. gee. the game is cute, charming, and not trying to demean women. *sigh* i bet if the character was a man they wouldnt be complaining...
UbercuberPosted by Ubercuber on 23 July 2008, 07:47PM
Imagine if it was a fat black women. The world would explode.

Also, how can we leave fat people alone if we're ALWAYS around them. I kid.
Grunt of GodPosted by Grunt of God on 23 July 2008, 08:33PM
Bit excessive. Isn't that sort of like saying making a castle bigger induces hate of big castles? What ever
DrEnzymePosted by DrEnzyme on 24 July 2008, 09:01PM
Ergh, this sort of whining annoys me. I mean seriously, if it's not one thing, then it's another. "The women in today's video games portray an unrealistic standard of beauty". "The women in today's video games are too fat and princess-ey". "Killing black people is racist". "Killing white people is racist".

Why can't people just look past all of that, and see that video games are works of art?

Oh, and well said, Donutta.
