Animal Crossing: City Folk Announced (Update)

Today, during its E3 press conference, Nintendo revealed Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii. Those familiar with the series will be right at home, since City Folk looks and plays almost exactly like every Animal Crossing before it. Players will be able to live in a virtual world that operates in real time, meaning that if you are so inclined, you can even ring in the New Year with your fluffy friends.

Players will also be able to customise their appearance and their humble abodes like before. However, City Folk does bring a few "surprising surprises" to the table. Firstly, as the title would suggest, there is a new city area in which players can shop and interact with, well, city folk. There's even an auction site, if you feel like hunting a bargain.

Secondly, however, is the announcement that City Folk will support the new WiiSpeak peripheral. Rather than acting like a communication device for a single person like the headsets of present, WiiSpeak will act as a "community microphone" that will allow entire rooms to interact with other rooms. It is not known whether or not this option will only be available with people who you have on your friends list, but given that it's Nintendo, it's a pretty sure bet.

UPDATE: Some new details about Animal Crossing: City Folk have emerged.

Players will be allowed to create an avatar as in previous versions, but in City Folk gamers will also have the chance to import and play as their Mii. Additionally, while the WiiSpeak peripheral will allow players to communicate flawlessly with others, it will not come bundled with the game. However, players will still be able to communicate with each other with the old fashioned on-screen keyboard.

Animal Crossing: City Folk is set to launch in the United States on November 16, with the WiiSpeak peripheral being sold separately for US$29.99. We will bring you more details about the New Zealand release and pricing as we get them.

Keep it locked to NZGamer for more information on Animal Crossing: City Folk and WiiSpeak as we get it, and be sure to keep checking throughout the day for more news from E3!

I love the Animal Crossing games. There's something about theme that makes you keep coming back to them. Hopefully this one will be no different.
