A new world best was established recently at an event hosted by PlayStation that involved two of New Zealand's most iconic motor sports figures, Greg Murphy and Jonny Reid racing head to head on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
Jonny's best lap time (0:53.527) on the London City circuit was the fastest lap ever achieved in the Audi R8 (according to GT5 Prologue global online rankings). More importantly, the initiative succeeded in raising more than $5,500 for the two drivers' chosen charities, the Starship and Child Cancer Foundations.
The Kiwi drivers battled it out at Auckland’s Giltrap Prestige with a factory car (Audi R8) on a London City street circuit, followed by another dual on the Suzuka circuit in Ferrari F1 cars. Despite both drivers winning one race each, Greg eventually triumphed courtesy of a greater winning margin in the second duel.
At the end of the race Jonny and Greg signed four GT5 Prologue PS3 consoles which were then auctioned on Trade Me. The one off opportunity for race fans to bid for such rare motoring memorabilia prompted nearly 10,000 page views on the site.
Warwick Light, General Manager Sales and Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment NZ, commented: "We knew that when we brought Jonny and Greg together for the launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on PS3 we were in for something special. To raise over $5,500 for charity and for Jonny to have set the record here in New Zealand is a real coup and will no doubt encourage fans around the world to better his performance."
