Internet forums have been ablaze with comments from gamers playing Grand Theft Auto IV suffering from the game freezing. According to these comments it appears that the problem is relatively widespread across both the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles.
Rockstar, at the time of press, have declined comment, and those calling into their support line have stated Rockstar do not know as yet what the cause is. Obviously, they're working to fix it but it doesn't appear that a patch will be out any time soon.
Most people are reporting that the game crashes during the opening cutscene preventing play of the game while a minority are saying it crashes in game infrequently during play.
So far, no remedies have been reported for the Xbox 360 but there is one for the PS3 which has met a relative amount of success - delete the install files and re-install the game.
Some are saying the issue is isolated to PS3 users with the 60GB issue but affects all Xbox 360 units. The fact that an NZGamer 40GB unit has crashed (only once) might indicate that the issue affects all PS3 SKU's.
If you've had the issue, feel free to vent in our forums. We have a thread created especially for you.
As soon as Rockstar makes a public announcement you can be sure to hear about it here on NZGamer.com.
