The movie rights for the Gears of War franchise have been auctioned off, and New Line Cinema has walked away as the winner.
Variety reports that New Line Cinema has grabbed the rights to produce a film based on the smash hit Xbox 360 game Gears of War. So far, the production team consists of Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Productions, who have been responsible for such films as The Nativity Story.
The script will be penned by Stuart Beattie, who has written the screenplays for the films Derailed and Collateral, in addition to partially contributing to the Pirates of the Caribbean series. According to the report, Beattie has already completed a 21-page treatment of the film, which helped to facilitate the deal.
Of course, as we have seen all too many times before, the awarding of movie rights does not always guarantee a finished product. The Halo series itself also had high hopes with its own movie project to be produced by none other than Peter Jackson, but a squabble over the film's budget led to its eventual demise
