Every now and again, a truly wonderful game comes along. You see it getting great reviews, you hear everyone praising it, but somehow – you just never get around to actually picking up a copy yourself. Resident Evil 4 came and went on the GameCube. The PlayStation 2 version eventually came along with some extra content. I still never managed to pick up the game. It wasn’t until the Wii version I finally decided to see what I had been missing. Better two years late than not at all right?
One advantage over playing the Wii version first is that it is by the superior version of the game. Its widescreen, it’s got heaps of extras and the graphics are slightly improved. Most importantly though, the controls have been revamped for the system. This makes aiming a lot more fun and much more natural.
The only downer with playing the game so late is of course the graphics have lost some of their wow factor now that it’s 2007. That said, Resi 4 more than holds it’s own and everything still looks fantastic. Despite lacking a little of that ‘next gen’ polish in a couple of places, the visuals are still very atmospheric. The soundtrack is fantastic too.
As for the action, Resi 4 is unrelenting and simply packed full of brilliant set-pieces. There are so many dramatic moments that conversations with your mates outlining your progress in the game will be packed with extreme hand gestures and sound effects, or maybe that’s just me.
Either way, the game is full of action. If you, like me, have somehow missed the game up until now and need some filler for your Wii catalogue – then Resi 4 is an essential purchase. You won’t be disappointed. The low retail, coupled with just how much damned game there is on this disc, makes this brilliant value for money.
