Original, Then Sequel?

Like any self respecting Xbox 360 owner, I’m looking forward to both Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 in the coming months. Now, if you enjoyed the first games, these purchases are no-brainers. What has me thinking though is the fact that I have yet to play the original of either of these games.

One option of course is to track down the originals and play them in preparation for the sequels. Perhaps this will hype me for the new games? Maybe it will give me an edge in the new games? On the other hand, I’m more likely to go into these games fresh. This should mean I have less expectations and the whole experience should be new. Both these games look to share a lot of idea’s with the originals and playing them too close together could make for a ‘groundhog day’ experience. With an attention span like mine, that’s really no good.

That said, will playing the sequels first completely ruin the originals for me? Will Fable 1 feel restricted and empty after playing the sequel? Would Gears of War feel dumbed down after Gears of War 2? Every now and then I do play an older game in a series I have missed, and occasionally wish I had a move that had been implemented in later games. Yet sometimes sequels can completely overlook what made the original so great in the first place.

I guess there are really two kinds of sequels, some that carry the theme over to different characters/worlds/scenarios and those that expand on the original game. Neither is say better than the other, but can the latter make the original game worthless? I mean who really plays Gran Turismo 1 if they have number 4?

I reckon you should probly play gears of war before no2, so you get an idea of the storyline. It sounds like gow2 will have pretty much everything from the first game plus some extras and advancements.

Yeah I also recommend playing GoW1 first, get your head around the story, so you'll understand what you fighting for in the second. It can be completed reasonably quick so it'll be easily done before GoW2 comes out. Don't bother with Fable 1, while a great game, 2 has a story set 500 years later so there shouldn't be much to do with the first, I would save your rpg energy for 2 since it's going to be very big.

Yeah, it's sorta like saying; I'm probally going to see Return of the King before I see the first two, that way I have less expectations and the whole experince will be new :p Well, maybe not quite the same but similar...

gears yes, fable no. gears by itself is its own beast and very enjoyable, plus you can get the hang of it before the sequel. plus you can find it cheap, and if you dont like it you can avoid gears 2 and save some money!

I'm actually trying to decide whether I should play Fable 1 before Fable 2 comes out as well. Never played it before, but I've been told that there won't really be any need to.

LOL...so many references to GoW having a 'story'.

Probably a good idea to play GoW just to get used to the style of play - but its not like theres some epic adventure story that you need to know.

Spoiler : Bad guys come out from underground. You shoot them. Lots of them. Then shoot some bigger ones and smaller ones. In the day and at night. Then shoot the biggest one on a train. End story. But ZOMG - there are more! Sequel.

If I was you I would play Fable 2 first, and then go back and play Fable 1 if you liked 2.

Also, GT1 is an awesome game and definitely worth playing even if you have GT4. The graphics might be better but the gameplay isn't really.

Fable 2 is set 500 years after Fable 1, so there's no need to play the first one.

Yeah definitely you need to get the story in Gears of War! Definitely! Or you could just read wikipedia.

Interesting, GoW didn;t seem like the kind of game that had a story, may have to look into it.

the story isnt all that, its just a good intro to what to expect and a great play through. ah, torque bow FTW.

Definitely play Gears1 first. You can't compare that to GT. It's like playing Halo 3 first and working your way back. Doesn't make sense.

GoW's story is basically just reasoning for the action, but it still was okay, better than a lot of movies in the cinemas (Though with movies that have names like "How She Move" it isn't really hard...).

You have to play gears one first to get the feel of the game and also the plot

Gears of War is said to be really similar to the first. So you Gears 1 won't feel dumbed down.
