Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

Published: Sat 19 Jul, 2008 | On:

Ah, Command and Conquer. The name alone takes me back to intermediate - and playing the older versions on my parent crappy (even for those days) PC. I dont think I actually ever finished one of them - but my brother and I always enjoyed taking 'stages'.

Well, last year C&C3 came out on the 360. I grabbed myself a copy and got all excited about getting owned by unforgiving AI. And man, was I spot on with that assumtion.

Im not going to explain the basics of C&C - because if you havent seen/heard/played one of these before then theres just no hope for you. This time around its still GDI vs NOD (and...some other group along the way...). To be honest, Im not sure if there is even a story here, I just laugh my ass off at the awesome cut scenes between levels - B acting at its best (and its intentional which makes it more awesome). The whole thing just comes down to good vs evil vs eviler.

Everthing is much the same from the PC days. although controls on the 360 pad are awkward (compared to mouse/ Keyboard combo) - but that was always going to be the case. Once you get used to them they are more than usable.

Heres what gets me. The difficulty. Rarely have I played such a hard game -even when on 'easy' mode (it lets you select difficulty before each stage...this however is a lie as the choices shouldnt be 'easy, medium, hard' they should be 'Hard, harder, Piss off you aint doing this LOLZ!') Some stages took me a good couple dozen times to pass. Infuriating? Yes. Fun? I suppose...I kept going back for more, so I guess that says something.

I guess Im not too good at C&C anyways - my tactic always revolved around 'Turtling', where I would build a base camp and whore up the tiberium to build an Uber Army to wipe out the foe in waves of pixel people glory. This game doesnt seem to have as many chances to shell up. And even if you do, the baddies always seem to sweep in with some crazy ass planes/ flamethrower tanks to spoil your party.

Anyway, its a fun game if you like to be punished. But if youre one of those controller throwers, for the sake of your TV, and your sanity, Id give this one a miss.

 8/10
