Next Gen - Are we there yet? /moan

OK, first blog in a while – and while my timing is ironically around the Gears of War 2 competition, it has nothing to do with that.

The above is a lie. Its ALL about GoW2.

Anywho – the topic of my blog today will not be about ‘Hi Im Uber and heres a short list of games I like just to get above the word limit’. No – today Id like to ask the question as to whether we have truly reached the ‘Next-Gen’ yet.

In my opinion – no. How far have we actually come since the PS2 and Xbox?

The only game at the moment that seems to come close to next gen is LittleBigPlanet – and that’s only based on what Ive seen and read. Obviously haven’t played it. But it looks like something that’s truly original and pushing the perceived boundy of what is possible with these machines.

LBP looks less like a game and more like Lego for ‘grown ups’. I haven’t heard a thing about a story or anything like that. Its all ‘user created content’ this and ‘ZOMG Sackboy Nariko!’ that. But the point is, developers have given players a whole bunch of tools and some pretty graphics and basically said ‘Go wild!’

Which kind of puts it in this weird space where your enjoyment of the game comes from what you do…not what the developer has done. If that makes sense. So, essentially if you don’t enjoy it –its your fault for being as creative as Michael Cullen with the Budget.

Anyone else sick of this picture?

But I digress. It at least looks like something new and exciting. Not another Space Marine FPS. Not another JRPG with a young male lead that’s actually written and rendered like a chick. Not Madden 2078.

At this stage one could be forgiven for thinking Next Gen = pretty graphics and playing online against racist little pricks in Texas.

And I know Wii isn’t technically next gen…but its barely last gen. Hell, anyone else play Lock On about 10-15 years ago? Same thing – but with people. But really, those that enjoy Wii aren’t those looking to push the boundry anyways. Preferring to play Mario, Zelda and maybe a couple other surprise titles each year. Plus, you know, when they’re all grown up – we’ll be up to the PS7 and Xbox1080.

Lock - ON! *Hides behind Basketball backboard

Another thing Im not a huge fan of is that these days we seem to be getting games that are released as a ‘work in progress’. What I mean is with the reliance on Online features, and with developers having to hit the crazy deadlines – we get games that are maybe 90% done…or need a truck load more testing. We essentially become the paying testers for games to help find bugs until they ‘patch it’. That’s moving a bit too close to PC gaming for my liking. Maybe if so many games weren’t fundamentally broken it wouldn’t be an issue.

So, what Im trying to say is – are we expecting too much from this Gen? Should we just accept pretty graphics in hope that some titles might arrive that are truly unique? Im not complaining at all. Hell, Ive got waaaaay too many games on pre-order to say Im not enjoying whats out there. Just something to think about. And fire some games below that you think are Next Gen.

Now Im off to play some more Fable 2 and give the thumbs up to some chick 12 times – which apparently will get me laid – and hope I don’t hit another game breaking bug that wasn’t found – at least the sunset looks pretty…next gen baby.

LOOOOOOLCATS! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

lol, nice blog, well from what i have seen from the "Next Gen" is better graphix, slightly better gameplay, more blood etc, nothing really different to what it was on ps2 or xbox so hopfully LBP or other games to be made could make a breakthrough to differ from other games already out.

Yes, but what is next gen now?

In the 5th gen, 3D just starting and optical media was finally coming through in gaming and 6th gen sought to improve on the foundations that had been built.

But in the 7th gen, it's harder to tell which direction gaming should go. We can't have 4th gen. :D I think Nintendo has sorta got the idea with making you feel like you're in the game but the technology might need a bit of work.

i loike the blog. You have a point. we have hit the next gen, but game makers havent yet released a game that pushes the consoles barrier, well, not so much barrier, but using the consoles potential in gaming. yeah the graphics are good, but we all know the ps3 can do a sh*t load more. but other than that, im impressed with everything else.

happy gaming peoples

I think it's the overall experience that makes it next gen. Wireless controllers, wireless internet, HD resolutions, dlc, friends list, achievements, voice chat, and user created games. While some may say we've had all these things before on PC and older consoles, they've never been fit together to be such a solid experience. The 360 does a good job of this, keeping every global(voice, achievements), and readily available, Sony still has some catching up to do, they seem to be following the PC route with a very disjointed and individual approach to each game.

5 Stars for you sir.
One for an excellent blog with some good, valid points in a similar style to my own blog.
Another for this statement: "playing online against racist little pricks in Texas." (Was it inspired by my comment on another recent blog??)
Another star for hitting a point that I forgot to mention in my first blog the other day. The point about games being released with problems, then requiring patches. In this day of downloading easily, it seems like game developers think "oh it doesn't matter, we can fix it later!"
A fourth star for the tags. Made me laff.
And the fifth star for not making a blog about "Hi Im Uber and here's a short list of games I like just to get above the word limit".

Good blog Uber, the ps2 challenged its boundaries only near the end of its development cycle. I think most companies do not have the kahonas to go beyond the quality of what is being produced. I remember when Zelda O of time was released they were basically broke until it sold millions of copies. Risk = Reward

Very nice blog, some things i've read before, others unique from the perspective you put it in.

"PS7 or XBOX1080". I love thinking about what XBOX are going to call their next console and I hiiiiighly doubt that they'll just keep adding another 360 degrees of control. I wouldn't mind if Sony and MS just sold console upgrades.

The full potential of this current generation is far from being realised at the moment. I thought the PS3 was going to have an absolute awesome year this year, but it's just kept rolling along, without stamping its authority... yet.

Graphics aren't everything. Just because a game looks better doesn't mean it's next gen. Hence i agree with you about LBP.

i don't think we'll ever be at the next gen because when we get there it will be the current gen... see my point.

AnthonyReplyPosted by Anthony on 15 November 2008, 08:09AM
I don't see how another generation of consoles means super amazing technology. It just means some companies made some more hardware to make some more money...

Yeh next gen just means the next generation of consoles anything with a bigger number at the end of it's name can be called next gen.
