Multiplayer Vs Going solo

Published: Sun 13 Jul, 2008 | 11 Comments

Thought I might test out this little blog feature with something Ive noticed about myself and gaming lately.

I think it was late last night playing a marathon (pun possibly intended) session of Beijing Olympics 2008 (great game - even if they neglected the smog effects), and I came to the realisation that Im really just a multiplayer gamer. Which is a pretty big change from my college days.

See, in college - it was all about the single player. Resident Evil, Final Fantasy 7, Die Hard Trilogy (FTW) - and although they were games where if mates came over we would each have 'turns', Id quite happily play single player for hours with no one else around.

Fast forward *mumble mumble* years and single player games just dont hold my interest anymore. Although I love me some Bioshock - Ive only played through that 1 and a half times. Mass Effect was the last RPG I played, and that was done and dusted within a couple of weeks mostly because I was living at home at the time, and Dad thought it was his nightly entertainment to watch me struggle with the Mako instead of TV. Dont get me started on the over hyped mess that is GTA4. Ugh.

No, these days I prefer to have mates around and throw on some good MP games. Ive never played Rainbox 6 Vegas single player. Ditto for Gears of War. And Halo 3 only became fun on Legendary with a mate blasting through co-op. Guitar Hero 3 is probaly my most played game (by a loooong way). Its good to finally have some great co-op games as well, as this was a neglected form of gaming around the time of Xbox Lives inception.

Maybe its just because I have less time to play games these days...or maybe they just dont make single player campaigns the way they used too, but after the good times my friends and I had playing Beijing Olympics...looks like multiplayer is where its at for me for a while (until I have a kid and the only time I can play games is at 4am...).

On the money! 5/5, Online is great, but having a couple of beers with mates and playing multiplayer with sports games and a great game like Goldeneye!!!

It's probably no surprise that you didn't like GTA IV if you don't play single-player modes anymore, as the online mode is rather lacklustre at best. However, I find I'm the complete opposite. I definitely love co-op games, but I hate playing against someone rather than with someone. I generally like to compete against myself, rather than someone else. I guess that's why I like golf...

I didnt just dislike GTA4 because it was single player - it was just a combination of samey (unfun) missions and kinda been-then-done-that story. Tried the online last weekend and was fun for a sec - but then you had to spend ages actually finding people.
