Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core is the long awaited prequel (or was it?) to its well known other half, Final Fantasy VII. Unlike many gamers out there I have never played Final Fastasy VII as I started the series with Final Fantasy VIII. I actually liked it, much to people's dismay -- so I can't really comment on how Crisis Core follows through with Final Fantasy VII's telling of how/what Sephiroth does when and after he finds out the truth about himself.
Back the game itself, story is based on Zack, the person that Cloud imitates in Final Fantasy VII. (I didn't know this and was told.) I realise that I probably should go back and play it but to tell you the truth I really can't be bothered. Anyway, while going through the game I picked up on a lot of things and realised the back story to VII that I didn't know before -- and I'm not that much of a geek to read up on the back story. For instance, what was mentioned in the actual NZGamer review was how the battle system has changed from its sequel -- but isn't that what Square Enix wanted to do? To change it up a bit? They did it for Final Fantasy XII, so why not this one too? If they did use the same system they had in Final Fantasy VII then that would be rather dull, as you'll only have one person ever in your party (Zack). The new system is about timing: when to attack, block and dodge -- so in theory you could button-mash to your heart's content, or think about it logically.
Nothing dramically new was added into the soundtrack, just remixes from VII and some off Final Fantasy: Advent Children. The voice dubs seemed rather naff to me and not as well done as they could have been. But then again I've always preferred Japanese voices with English subtitles rather than just English voices.
Overall it's a game seems to be more suited for the fans of Final Fantasy VII, like how Advent Children was the long a waited ending to the game.
