I have been reading around NZG lately and there has been talk of an achievement system. I think it would be a great idea and would encourage the use of all features around all parts of the website. Large scale, could be the best thing that ever came to this website.

So I'm writing this blog as a follow up to my last one, to suggest my idea that I quite literally on just thought of in the last twenty minutes or so. Achievement on the large scale, of every where you go. Websites such as gravatar offer a globally recognized service. This makes life so much easier. Would it make it more fun to use the internet if we got points like that of NZGamer? Signing up with Bebo gets you 100, having an MSN account gets you 150 + 10 for every contact you have. 100 deviantArt uploads gets you a kickass badge...

I really am just brain storming at this point. I have a couple of pros and cons for me to venture into this as a business opportunity, but would like to hear your points of view. It could bomb in one instance or be the next big thing in the other.

PROS

  • Motivates that of the internet community
  • Opportunity to boost internet marketing globally
  • Can milk corporations for bribes for special achievements
  • Can hack and be the best at the internet

CONS

  • Lots Of effort to incorporate into already exsistant applications
  • Copyright problems with Mirco$oft
  • Global Genocide Because I'm The Hacked Best

Please, tell me what you have to say. I may spare your life one day.

On the whole points thing for NZG I think it's a good idea. But I think a user moderated system could be useful too. Such as someone posting a blog or forum post you liked or you found useful you could give thanks which adds to their points. But if they are acting like a tool say for example: spamming in the forums with over 60 posts in one day just to get points you could decrease their rep and if they get enough negative rep they have some sort of icon on their profile to bring shame upon them.

Dude i had the same idea to put on other forums but people pushed it away i still think it would be a whole new thing because i haven't seen any other website with them.

Also if the mods think it becomes to much for them they could make new positions like an achievements moderator group.

this idea has already been implemented on other forums, have a look at the escapist's forums (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/). As for copyright problems, i doubt that would be a problem since Sony, Blizzard, and many other companies are starting to integrate achievements into their games.
