Star Wars Without Star Wars

I'm a big fat Star Wars who isn't fat but I've found it difficult up until recently to be excited for the new movie, Clone Wars, which comes out next week.

Why is this? In my College years I spent an embarassingly large amount of money and time on Star Wars and still consider myself to be a devout fan. Surely, these sorts of things should make me excited by default?

The biggest issue I believe is that the Clone Wars has no definitive arc. The war bgins in Attack of the Clones and ends in Revenge of the Sith. All you need to know is that the galaxy got its Michael Bay on between those two movies, and that's enough.

Clone Battle

The Clone Wars is about exploring what happened during the war but I fail to see how it will add to the overall Star Wars saga. Star Wars is about Anakin's fall and redemption, the fall and rise of the Jedi and the rise and fall of the Sith. The events of Clone Wars don't seem to factor into this.

Anakin and Ashoka

The new movie does sound quite interesting, I mean, giving Anakin a padawan... it's equally odd as it is intriguing, especially seeing as how in Revenge no mention is made of Ashoka (the padawan)... But without fitting into the saga it doesn't feel all that necessary.

On the flipside there's The Force Unleashed which takes place between Revenge and A New Hope, the difference here is that there are significant events which unfold which will alter your perception of certain characters we've grown to love over the years.

The Force Unleashed

Another thing which bodes odd for me with Clone Wars is that it isn't going to open with the 20th Century Fox fanfare since Warner Bros are the new distributor. It's just going to seem strange, foreign even, and helps none to tie the film into the Star Wars saga.

Over the past week or so I've been looking into the movie a bit more and am liking what I see but when I watch the movie I won't be going because I'm a Star Wars geek but because the movie looks interesting. And as a Star Wars fan that's a little disappointing.

I leave you with the final trailer for The Clone Wars...

I've been a huge fan of The Clone Wars novels. I've found them an excellent way to flesh out a cast that is otherwise paper thin in the movies. Aalya Secura, Barriss Offee, Kit Fisto, Plo Koon, Stass Allie: I found these characters to be rather likeable, and it made Order 66 that much more powerful when it happened.

I guess that's why I'm excited for The Clone Wars. I agree that the movies are about Anakin, but I really get into the expanded universe and feel that there is so much more to Star Wars than just Anakin. I'm really getting into Legacy, and I also have a massive soft spot for all things pre-KOTOR.

I've never really been big on EU, but I appreciate that it's there. I think the fact that this is a Star Wars MOVIE, which used to be an exclusive outlet for the franchise, makes it feel more foreign.

I think the reality is Star Wars is one big cash cow, and while this upcoming CGI movie maybe OK, you can't help but think someone wanted to make more $$$.

This has Grievous right?

In the cartoon, he was the most feared robo-bug-man in all the universe, death and destruction rained down on all those who stood in his way, and countless Jedi fell at his feet.

Skip to episode III, hes a crippled freak who puts up about has much fight as the Jedi Children after order 66, and generally sucks ass.

I only want to see it for him and Assaj Ventress, another badass Motherf**ker in the cartoon.
