Why Halo 3 is my favourite game of all time

Halo 3: you might have heard of it. You might also know that I gave it 9.9 on this site, one of only two games to receive that honour. Some people probably hate me for it too, claiming that I've sold out, don't know what I'm talking about, have no taste in games, and that [insert generic ancient Commodore 64 game no one has ever heard of because it was fucking crap in the first place and that's why no one remembers it here] is far, far better.

Yet I stand by my Halo 3 review more than any other review that I've done on this site. Halo 3 is practically perfect. I have had it since its release -- indeed, I got to play it before its release -- and I've probably finished it about 20 times in the last year. It's easily my favourite game of all time, and it has taken a looooong time for a game to come and knock Streets of Rage 2 off its perch. But why is Halo 3 my favourite game of all time? And why do I consider it perfect? Outside of what I said in my review, let's look at a few things that keep me coming back to it.

Length

Halo 3 isn't a particularly long game. In fact, the missus and I have gotten so good at it now that we can pretty much breeze through it on Heroic in about six hours. However, this length is one of its strengths. Rather than a 150-hour epic that you never want to see again after you finish it, Halo 3 is the perfect length to revisit. You know that you can go back to it and be done with it without having to start planning play sessions in your schedule. Much like Streets of Rage 2 attracted me to its two-hour length, Halo 3 appeals to me because the single-player campaign doesn't require me to dedicate huge amounts of my life to it.

Challenge

Halo 3 is genuinely one of those games you can get better at. You can perfect headshots, you can learn all the routes, you can even try and perfect a speed-run of the game. It presents a rather impressive difficulty hike once set to Legendary, and truly mastering the game will take some time for most people. Indeed, I still find death frequent in Legendary mode, yet I can still feel myself getting better. Given that most games tend to hold your hand while you are playing them these days, it's rather refreshing to find a game that requires a bit of skill.

Co-op

Ironically, I rarely play Halo 3 online. Maybe when I can't sleep and I'm bored -- but I generally don't like to play against people. Halo 3 offers a great co-op mode that allows me to play with people rather than against them. In fact, nearly every time I play it, it's with my fiancee or my sister (who is also a Halo nut). Additionally, Halo 3 really requires us to work together, rather than just going and doing our own thing -- something that really reminds me who tacked on the co-op mode in Streets of Rage 2 is. There are some challenges that I know I would just tear my hair out playing by myself, but with a partner I know I can get them to flank and kill the enemies while I dance around keeping them distracted.

Creativity

For me, there is always something new for me to try. I always find myself trying out different strategies for different situations. Maybe I'll try and take out a Scarab tank completely with a tank. Maybe I'll take out a Hunter completely with melee attacks. Maybe I'll try and finish a level without swapping from the default weapon (it generally never ends well). There is always something new to try, and it always keeps me coming back to the game.

Secrets

There is just so much to find in Halo 3, it's not funny. In all honesty, finding all the skulls is a mission in itself, and I still haven't even gotten the Marathon Man achievement. On top of that, there are always new funny Easter eggs to find, even if it's just a bit of voice acting you've never heard before. Sometimes, even some of the things the grunts can say will surprise you. It's something that definitely helps to keep Halo 3 feeling fresh, and it's one of the things that keeps me coming back to it.

Timelessness

No matter how many times I look up at the Milky Way, no matter how many times tank beats everything, no matter how many times I destroy a Scarab, I never, ever get sick of playing Halo 3. It is just filled with moments and lines that are absolutely priceless. It still brings a smile to my face every time I play it. I still watch every cutscene (when someone will let me) and I still take great joy in reliving every moment over and over again. Halo 3, for me at least, never gets boring.

Halo 3 is easily my favourite game of all time. It somewhat hurts me a little when people say that it's tripe or overrated, because I haven't felt this way about a game since I was 8. Indeed, I stand by my 9.9 score more than anything I've ever said. In fact, if I was to review it today with hindsight, it would be the first 10 on NZGamer. And if you think differently, well... you're entitled to your opinion. You're just wrong.

Lame game.

Halo is overrated. An nice dig at the superior Bioshock.
stupidlikeafoxPosted by stupidlikeafox on 21 July 2008, 09:06AM
its no whizzball on c64...

*ahem* i mean its no cod4 for story, but still deserves its own acknowledgement.

I think that the continuing story of Halo and the Halo universe is one of it's greatest achievements. The depth to both sides of the conflict is a testament to Bungie's creativity and desire to truly create a living universe in which the games can be played in.
UbercuberPosted by Ubercuber on 21 July 2008, 09:59AM
Id agree that the Halo universe is an interesting one. But has there been a decent 'villian' that you fight at the end?
paddy01Posted by paddy01 on 21 July 2008, 10:21AM
There was Tartarus in Halo 2. I actually liked the end mission in Halo 3 more than any boss battle i have ever fought.

Halo 3 was a great game, I enjoyed the first 1/2 of the game. However I think it was so overhyped not by just MS, but everyone that even if it was truely the best game of all time, it probably still wouldn't have delivered to everyones expectations.
paddy01Posted by paddy01 on 21 July 2008, 10:58AM
I must admit though that I truly HATED the Cortana level. Stupid High Charity. Stupid Flood. Stupid Cortana. Why you have to go and get yourself captured huh?
UbercuberPosted by Ubercuber on 21 July 2008, 11:41AM
Really enjoyed the jungle levels...but then it became corridor-ville (albeit trying to make it seem epic...but you're actually just on rails). An ironic twist considering its a similar slam on other FPS.

RE:Posted by Ubercuber on 21 July 2008, 11:41AM, that first level was on the money.

I feel the same way as Donutta except about the original Halo not Halo 3. But they are all pretty awesome.
tkd_mattPosted by tkd_matt on 21 July 2008, 05:58PM
Feel pretty much the same why. I stayed away from the hype, and took it for what it was once I got it. Awesome. Played Multi more than single, a little 4 player Legendary is fun, and I really need to get round to finishing Heroic.
Daniel1987Posted by Daniel1987 on 21 July 2008, 07:24PM
Halo is a great game, albeit one I didn't really connect with, but personally I'd go for CoD4 over H3 every time, maybe because of it's reality? Or the fact that H3 really fell victim to it's own hype in certain stages, and tried to become 'too epic' for it's own good IMO, ala CoD3.

I may hire it out again to see if I still feel the same way, but I'm pretty sure it won't change my mind
xSHADOWxPosted by xSHADOWx on 21 July 2008, 07:30PM
Yeh totally agree. No one can say it truly suks even if it doesn't appeal to them, they don't have to be a fanboy but could Halo-haters please stop hating Halo. Nice blog.
GenocidePosted by Genocide on 21 July 2008, 07:48PM
Lots of your points can also be said for many other games.

RE: Posted by Genocide on 21 July 2008, 07:48PM

Really? CoD4 has the length, but lacks the co-op. (It also has stupid spawning enemies.)

Heavenly Sword has the timelessness, but it doesn't have the secrets.

Guitar Hero III has the challenge, but it doesn't have the creativity.

It's not of Halo having an individual element found in other games, but the fact it has all these elements. And I've yet to find a game that has the awe-inspiring moments that Halo 3 does.

Re: Geno & Liam. I think Geno has a good point there, and one game I could think that ticks all the boxes above would be RSV2....
UbercuberPosted by Ubercuber on 21 July 2008, 08:13PM
Hate to say it, but aside from Co-op, Bioshock ticks all the boxes, and does them better than Halo 3. As does R6V2 (well, that does it all + it has T Hunts), and COD4.
DonuttaPosted by Donutta on 21 July 2008, 08:22PM
Bioshock definitely checks creativity and secrets. It does not, however, check challenge in any way, shape, or form. I beat the entire game using a wrench. Nor is it timeless, because once you work out why you are kindly doing stuff, the whole game just becomes obviously linear and boring.
stupidlikeafoxPosted by stupidlikeafox on 21 July 2008, 08:26PM
cod4 had the best momoents in gaming for miles, rsv2 has t hunts and halo 3 has fun multiplayer. moral of the story, own all three. :P
Grunt of GodPosted by Grunt of God on 21 July 2008, 08:47PM
Personally I found C0D 4 overated! Its story, all though good first time round, becomes meaningless and rather shallow second time round. I love Halo, play co-op all the time with my family.
marbigPosted by marbig on 22 July 2008, 12:17AM
I disagree completely about the secrets, I found it was lacking in easter eggs, especially when compared to Halo 2.
I really love the social aspects of the game, how you can have four players on one console, only one of them has to be signed in, and you can all search for matches against others. Too many games are doing just Xbox Live play. Halo 3 combines them perfectly.
stupidlikeafoxPosted by stupidlikeafox on 22 July 2008, 06:42AM
yeah with cod4 (and bioshock), even though the moments blew me away, now that i know whats gonna happen i wouldnt play it again. halo 3 has more replayability.
DominaterPosted by Dominater on 25 July 2008, 08:22PM
I bought Halo 3 before I even got my 360 that's how much I was looking forward to this game and yes I reckon it being so overhyped that alot of people instantly hated it, But it was the first game I got on 360 and in my oppinion is still one of the best if not the best game out not only because of its replayability, it's challenge ect... ect... but also because of it's great multiplayer capability, I like the ranking system, the party system, the matchmaking system and the gametypes and of course Forge which is absolutely awesome so yeah that's my oppinion.
howzitPosted by howzit on 26 July 2008, 07:06PM
Very lame game. Bioshock>Shit>Halo3
howzitPosted by howzit on 26 July 2008, 07:07PM
I love the long list of Donutta's favourite games of all time.... Heavenly Sword, GTA4, Halo3 etc.
LoNePosted by LoNe on 3 August 2008, 09:21PM
halo control scheme = fail.

Not having clocked halo 1 or 2 (i had a ps2) i just honestly... meh.

I dont think it deserves anything above a 7 really. multiplayer saves it.
howzitPosted by howzit on 3 August 2008, 09:26PM
Halo 3 controls are a benchmark for 360 shooters. They were ace!
RuptunexPosted by Ruptunex on 8 August 2008, 04:27PM
It still can't top the original
stupidlikeafoxPosted by stupidlikeafox on 13 August 2008, 03:49PM
i find vegas 2 has the best controls for me. so fluid!
