Immersion

Published: Wed 8 Oct, 2008 | 44 Comments
Tags: Wii, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09

It's amazing what a little bit of immersion can do. Do you want to know why the Wii is winning? It's not because it's cheaper. It's not because it's appealing to a casual market. It's because you can take any game and make it that much more enjoyable by adding motion controls. Take Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 for example. When I worked for this site and reviewed it, I had such lovely things to say about it as:

You just don’t seem to care about anything, and being seven over par only induces feelings of apathy. I’m not asking for castles and windmills; I’m just asking for some kind of visceral feel for what I’m doing.

The analogue swing mechanic feels unnatural and doesn’t allow for proper swing control, meaning that you are likely to always smash the ball at 100% power.

As you can tell, I didn't really enjoy it. The problem was that playing golf with the analogue stick was about as much fun as eating dirt. On the Wii version, however, you have almost one-to-one controls with the Wii remote. You really do feel like you are swinging a golf club. I even found myself looking at the floor when taking a stroke so as to get a proper swing. It feels like you are playing golf, and that's a good thing.

You also remove the hassles that come with analogue control. I could never, ever get the ball to travel straight in the PS3 version because I found the analogue stick would always veer off in one direction. This was because taking a swing with an analogue stick isn't natural. It doesn't happen with the Wii version. Hell, I can even twist the Wii remote to get a draw on my swing instead of having to wade my way through spreadsheets. It's natural, intuitive, and fun. Had EA sent the Wii version for review, it probably would have gotten a 9/10.

It's this immersion from motion control that makes the Wii so successful. It's the way you twist Samus' hand in Metroid Prime 3; it's the way you thrust your hand forward to do a Force Push in The Force Unleashed; it's the way you turn the Wii wheel in Mario Kart just like you would in real life (if real life had blue shells of doom) that make the experience just feel so much more real and fun.

In short, Nintendo took a gamble, but they were right. It wasn't the sense of sight where improvements needed to be accommodated; it was the sense of touch. By allowing us to feel our games, Nintendo has given us a console that is truly in a league of its own. Sure, diehard "hardcore" gamers that stay up all night playing Halo 3 and then bragging about their performance online will disagree, but these people are dinosaurs, like the arcade anorak who refused to accept the increased production values and complexity of modern titles. The Wii offers us the closest thing we can get at the moment to virtual reality, and it's the way of the future. That is why it's selling so well.

I agree with what you've said.
Mostly.
Nothing annoys me more than games that have waggle tacked on purely because it's on the Wii...

If I wanted to feel like I was actually playing golf, I'd actually go play golf.

Still haven't played too much Wii, but got tired of it quickly when I did. Bleh. I'd rather have a more traditional gaming experience.

RE: Posted by Chris Redfield on 8 October 2008, 08:24PM

Green fees are actually quite expensive. Tiger Wood 09 is like $99 on the Wii. That will get you three rounds of golf -- in New Zealand. Can you imagine the price of a round of golf in Japan?

Chris RedfieldReplyPosted by Chris Redfield on 8 October 2008, 08:45PM
Yeah, I guess.

Meh, I'm just not really into that kind of gaming. I don't feel like moving much or standing up when I game. Doesn't click with me.

WozzaReplyPosted by Wozza on 8 October 2008, 08:47PM
Depends on the game, totally. Any other bowling game feels 100% lamez0r now though.

Wii is winning? You mean in America don't you? I haven't played any Wii it does look like fun though but there are hardly any games on wii. I wish microsoft would bring some kind of motion control things out for the 360. cos then you could have the best of both worlds without having multiple consoles. i'm sure I heard a rumour about micrsoft doing something. I just can't remember what...

Aww.. I use the GCN controller for Mario Kart..

And i just sit down and move my wrist.

I save the jumping around and lighsaber noises for TFU when no one else is home :D

...man, you've really developed into quite the Wii fanboy.

And the Wii is winning because its Nintendo. And Asia loves it some Nintendo. The motion controls are all well and good, but at the end of the day its a gimmick - aimed at kids and families...and its Nintendo. THATS why its winning.

Ill stick with traditional gaming. Ive never been so bored as when I was playing Wii.

If the Wii is winning because its Nintendo, then why did the Gamecube lose?

If the Wii is winning because its Nintendo, then why did the Gamecube lose? - I thought the GCN did well? It was still selling the US/Canada last year when I was there, I was like What The?

UbercuberReplyPosted by Ubercuber on 9 October 2008, 11:38AM
Games were too expensive? Lack of advertising (compared to the might of Sony)? It looked like a queer futuristic handbag? No defining system selling games (outside of ZOMG Mario Part 654)

I dont remember any ads for GC...but TV is infected with Olivia Newton John hamming it up for the Wii.

Koopa18ReplyPosted by Koopa18 on 9 October 2008, 12:01PM
Those points are all pretty much NZ specific, where the Wii is not winning at all.

And Smash Bros Melee was a system seller, i reckon. 7 million copies cant lie. That or Metroid Prime. They are both fairly defining of the cube.

And Ron, 22 million cubes, 140 million PS2s, 24 million xboxes, but the cube lasted a year or two longer than the Xbox.

stupidlikeafoxReplyPosted by stupidlikeafox on 9 October 2008, 12:14PM
looks like their franchises were getting stale on the NGC so they needed to add a new gimmick. just add waggle and you have a new top selling console!

Koopa18ReplyPosted by Koopa18 on 9 October 2008, 12:21PM
Wait, my mistake, it looked like a queer handbag everywhere in the world.

Although it was easy to carry!

SmurfWorksReplyPosted by SmurfWorks on 9 October 2008, 12:39PM
Gamecube games that I played were all finished off nicely and rarely glitched in any way. SSB:Melee is a prime example.

I was always a bit wary of the Wii when it was launched, I always saw it as such a hassle.
But as time goes by i'm almost tempted to purchase one. I'm a 360 fanboy through and through. But I like Nintendo's approach to gaming, they offer a more light hearted approach, it's nice to take a break from cod4 and play some smash bros with a few beers and mates

a) How did you manage to go back in time 67 years, and how quick was the internet back then?

b) Yeah but at least you don't have to walk all the way to your ball only to hit it again only to walk all the way to your ball only to hit it again only to walk all the way to your ball only to hit it again only to...

I don't see how the Wiimote adds to the immersion. You random flick the two parts about in boxing on Wii sports to absolutely no avail.

As much as I want to love the Wii, I just can't bring myself to play it. After I finished Zelda and Mario I rarely am able to find a game I could be bothered playing on it. Waggle was cool for the first few months but now it feels gimmicky, I'd rather play 360 versions with better graphics, achievements, good online, over an inferior version with gimmick controls. But I'll hold onto it in case another big Nintendo game is released anytime soon.

alienhominidReplyPosted by alienhominid on 11 October 2008, 11:12AM
I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo came out with there own versions of achievements. but they wouldn't be called achievements and that would make them completely different

Nintendo tends to not copy anything dude. I don't know what your on about. Nintendo just do there own random thing and their fanboys blindly follow. And convince other people to blindly follow too. Games make a console. Nintendo really doesn't have them

Koopa18ReplyPosted by Koopa18 on 11 October 2008, 04:20PM
Lol. You are retarded. What do you think defines a "game".

And yes, its Nintendos magical mind control that makes people play their notgames and buy their consoles.

As funny as that was, it hardly counts at all - he hates everything! If he didnt he wouldnt have a job.

If hed reviewed the other versions, he wouldnt have had anything better to say.

The thing is Yahtzee always talks about the negatives of a game. It's why he has a job.

Yeah but he was right about it. In a review for Super Mario Galaxy (Btw WHAT is so fucking Super about Mario?) he said that the game would be better on the gamecube because of the control scheme.

ChatterboxZombieReplyPosted by ChatterboxZombie on 12 October 2008, 11:02AM
THE WII-MOTE CAN MAKE A GAME SEEM THAT MUCH BETTER IF THE DEVELOPERS ACTUALLY PUT IN EFFORT TO SYNCING THE THING, BUT THEY NEVER DO! CAPS LOCK FTW!!!

stupidlikeafoxReplyPosted by stupidlikeafox on 12 October 2008, 02:49PM
LOUD NOISES!

but yeah, hope they refine the controls to something fluid. with good controls and a decent concept it could be the best thing since sliced bread...

Controls ruined Red Steel, which was a game I actually enjoyed despite them.

You must have sucked then, RS's controls were perfect for me, I was popping headshots left right and center.

tiamat1990ReplyPosted by tiamat1990 on 13 October 2008, 12:49AM
Yeah you're right but it doesn't always apply. Some games are just more difficult but that could be attributed to the developers' lack of innovation. No one has still found a decent way of doing melee attacks. Waggling it is not immersive. The pointing mechanics however, are pretty amazing. I love pointing and shooting instead of using a stick.

RuptunexReplyPosted by Ruptunex on 13 October 2008, 12:46PM
Metroid Prime 3 worked well i must admit.

Dancing is ForbiddenReplyPosted by Dancing is Forbidden on 13 October 2008, 03:52PM
@Donutta's blurb - The Pointer device and some movement controls are really cool. However, using 'shake the nunchuck' as a subsitute for pressing a button doesn't increase immersion, it just annoys the f**k out of the player.

@Daniel's "Controls ruined Red Steel, which was a game I actually enjoyed despite them."

That is the most awesome thing I have ever heard. Red Steel, which was otherwise the worst game I have ever bought new, was made into an awesome game by the controls. It's like a shooting gallery game where you get to move your character as well.
