Hype

Published: Fri 5 Sep, 2008 | 15 Comments

There has been a lot of hype for The Force Unleashed, a lot of it coming from me as a Star Wars junkie, and a lot of it coming from LucasArts.  However, after playing the demo, I have to say that The Force Unleashed on the PS3 and 360 is going to be very average.  No wonder EB is offering a special refund offer.

Here are the reasons why The Force Unleashed is not a next-gen game.

Disappearing corpses: Surely, we are beyond this now.  Even the time it takes for a corpse to vanish is tragic.  I have killed soldiers, only see their lifeless bodies vanish before my eyes.  I guess they all speak to Qui-Gon every night, eh?  Speaking of which...

Die already: I have held people in Force grips.  I have impailed them with my lightsaber.  They did not die.  In fact, they continued to flail around and even shoot at me.  The only died when I released the Force grip.  Way to go LucasArts.

Using the Force is clumsy: Mr Deflok seems to think that it's just that we are conditioned to play games a certain way.  I just think that using Force grip sucks in general.  Two analogue sticks?  What were they thinking?

Crappy graphics:  Have you seen the PS2 version?  It looks nearly as good as the 360 version.  There is no excuse for this.

DMM and Euphoria are overrated: So a Stormtrooper will cling to a pole if I am dumb enough to try and use Force grip instead of dashing over there and tearing a hole through him with my lightsaber?  Big whoopdee-f'ing-do.  Windows smash realistically, you say?  Yes, because a cracked pain of glass that hits a floor with stay cracked instead of shattering, and then will vanish. (Just like those corpses. Guess sand has managed to figure out the Jedi secrets too.  No wonder Anakin didn't like it.)  It doesn't make the game fun -- at all.

So... yeah.  Glad I changed my pre-order to the Wii version.  The graphics are up to snuff, I get some pretty decent waggle, I get a duel mode, extra story, a $10 saving and a different studio developing it that actually looks like it's made the game fun.  I mean, what would you rather do?  Throw junk at an AT-ST to take it's health down, or just hack away at it bit by bit?  Yeah, thought so.

So, in conclusion to this rant, I suggest everyone purchase the PS2 or Wii versions of this game, made by Krome Studios from Aussie.  They, at least, appear to know how to make a decent game.  I look forward to their Clone Wars game as well.

For the record, I feel that most gamers have been conditioned to be quick to use brute force attacks (lightsabers) over technical moves (the force). Using two sticks is pretty rough, I'll admit.

I'm also looking into the wii version after playing the demo on ps3. I can see the wii version being vastly superior.

Even if the Wii version is better, 80% of people will never admit it.

I did have a few laughs - good blog.

Personally I think we get caught up in the hype, I really think Bioshock got huge hype from the journalists that played it first. Some companies are pretty clever in this way, I think even you admitted a bit of getting involved with the hype of Halo 3 after being one of first in world to play it.

Always half the hype for games that fit into genres for generic gameplay or popular franchises.

It seems the game as a whole will be quite a letdown actually. Well that might be a bit harsh, Good but not great, would be a better phrase to use. I think its looking at around the 7-7.5 mark for most systems..
