Graphics Over Gameplay?

Published: Mon 18 Aug, 2008 | 29 Comments
Tags: Star Wars, The Force Unleashed

For a while now, I have had a little dilemma: which version of The Force Unleashed do I get?  Do I go with the PS3/360 version, which has better graphics/physics as well as traditional controls, or do I go with the Wii version, which has less impressive graphics/physics, but a more immersive control scheme, extra plot, and a duel mode?

Unfortunately, watching trailers hasn't really helped much.  Sometimes I look at the cool things you can do in The Force Unleashed on the 360/PS3 version and just think how awesome it will be with that physics engine.  Case in point:

Then, unfortunately, I see videos like the following and I think to myself how repetitive it all my get very quickly.  I was expecting more enemies on screen, ala Heavenly Sword, but I seem to just get the impression that the game can be rather barren at times...

I also notice a lot of framerate dips and screen tearing, which isn't very inspiring...

Then, I look at the Wii version and I suddenly feel like I want that version more:

The graphics aren't as good, obviously, but they're still pretty crisp for a Wii game.  And if you watch halfway through that video, you'll see a bit where you get to visit the Jedi temple that is exclusive to the Wii and PS2 versions.  That's very, very tempting.

I also find that I don't really notice the downgrade in physics, especially as everything is moving so fast -- and I really, really like the idea of using the Wii Remote as a lightsaber.

Ultimately, I still don't know which version to get.  I'm thinking that maybe I'll get the 360/PS3 version first, and if my fears play out then I can take it back thanks to a seven-day return policy and get the Wii version.

I guess it still goes to show that I'm shallow and that I'll take pretty first.  Yet at the same time, if the game isn't going to deliver where it counts, I'll take the plain version that offers more depth.  Kind of like women, really...

i reckon try the wii version first. if you dont notice any bad graphics then you get the gameplay. otherwise "upgrade" to ps3. do graphics really matter that much anyway?

I think the Wii will be great, but the issues I have is that the ability to tell the story. I think that the Next Gen titles will have it over the Wii at that point.

Im going to go Pre-Order the Wii version soon. But only because i dont have any other systems.

I will definitely be interested to see how reviews for the different platforms compare though.

I see the graphics for this game as a better feature than the gameplay. So waving a Wiimote won't be as fun as some spectacular visuals. IMO.

I do hope this game has a "realistic saber mode" such as in Jedi Academy.

Im pretty sure those people were getting slashed up and then just falling over. whole. :(

i think you should opt for gameplay instead of graphics. why have better graphics and crap gameplay?

Koopa: They want a T for teen rating, so don't expect any kind of secret codes. We all know what happens if you leave stuff in. *cough* Hot Coffee *cough*

I reckon they should leave more hidden stuff in and just say that it's the censors fault for missing it lol

I've always been a staunch believer in gameplay over graphics.

If this was Motionplus compatible I'd say definitely the Wii version, otherwise it'd probably end up a waggle fest. So I reckon rent them first, then decide.

Yep Gameplay > Graphics. (Although, if Im playing 'crappy' graphics games, it has to be retro. Some PS1 and 2 games are hard to look at.)

I just found out that the Wii version if $10 cheaper. That might sway my decision...

DogonabusReplyPosted by Dogonabus on 18 August 2008, 08:54PM
Geddy Lee said it best - ten bucks is ten bucks.

$10 cheaper, but still $110?

Do an EB 7 day rental of both, that'll sort it.

As much as I wish I wasn't, I'm a graphics whore. PS3 version for me :(.

GenBattleReplyPosted by GenBattle on 19 August 2008, 01:24PM
I prettymuch have no choice, i only own a 360. That said i could buy the wii version for my gf's wii. But i won't.

As far as the videos go, the wii control scheme looks very awkward and cumbersome to use, like some other wii games. The Xbox control scheme seems to flow better from attack to attack, and the physics are what i would really be getting it for. Bash the graphics-lovers you may, but part of having good gameplay is an extensive and full engine.

There's a demo out this week. I shall download and play. If I feel that the main attraction for me is going to be the story/universe, then I'll probably go with the Wii version. If it really is "the Force unleashed", then I will go with the 360/PS3 version. I think...

RuptunexReplyPosted by Ruptunex on 20 August 2008, 10:14PM
Gameplay is more important than graphics. Otherwise you can just go what a movie.

stungafReplyPosted by stungaf on 21 August 2008, 10:24AM
shouldn't this be a forum post?

wii saber movements are apparently pretty lame. just waggle it and the dude will do what the hell he wants. i think the story differences are going to be pretty token. if not it'll be uploaded to youtube.

if i had a wii i'd still get it for PS3. maybe just have a go on a mates wii version for the novelty value. (which is all i see it as.)

RuptunexReplyPosted by Ruptunex on 21 August 2008, 03:01PM
Isn't the demo up soon?

ChatterboxZombieReplyPosted by ChatterboxZombie on 23 August 2008, 09:33AM
