O, Retro!

O, Retro!

Is the N64 retro yet? I don't even know. It's heyday was over ten years ago. In the last few days, I have been looking around TradeMe at long forgotten games that I traded in to get Perfect Dark and Majora's Mask during the N64's last gasp. I remember EB was offering a deal back then (this was... 2000?) so you could trade in any four N64 games and get new titles for nix. Whoops.

Yeah, well I wasn't earning very much back then, and the chance to trade in the likes of Beetle Adventure Racing and Knockout Kings 2000 when they weren't doing much more than feeling sorry for themselves as the dust accumulated was too good to pass up. So pass it up I didn't.

I tried to make a list of the games I had traded, but I could only remember 6/8. That's 3/4 for you chronic simplifiers out there. Anyway, out of those six there were only two I really felt bad for ditching - Turok 2 and Episode 1: Racer. Both are available on TradeMe for not-too-much.

Anyone who has been looking to pick up old 64 titles will notice that some [^^RARE!^^] titles have quite a hefty price tag attached. Banjo Tooie? Conkers Bad Fur Day? They crop up now and again, and seldom for less than about $90. Back when they first came out, they were $129. That means that they're holding their value pretty well.

A trap for young players is getting confused between rare and Rare. One means scarce, the other is a formerly awesome developer now in the gorsey pocket of Microsoft. But hey, it's time I let that go.

What led me to start searching for titles I could add to my meagre-but-all-solid-gold collection was seeing Shadow Man for sale as I was browsing for something else. I read extensively about this game online and in the fabled N64 Gamer magazine. I never got round to picking it up, but now's my chance.

What N64 games have you managed to score from TradeMe or from overseas? Anyone who shops regularly wherever PAL carts are sold will tell you there's a great deal of great deals to be had. I get weak at the knees imagining all the gaming hours locked away in those carts for a guy like me who never put the hard yards in as a teenager.

I hope I win a few auctions in the coming days.

I have got Banjo Tooie and Kirby 64 as some of the rarer titles from TM.

Other titles that still have a decent price tag i own are Mario Party 2, Mario Kart 64 and Smash Bros - but i got them in the shops back in the day.

Also picked up a few titles such as Buck Bumble and Episode I: Racer.. that werent as spectacular, but fun nonetheless.

A few years ago I sold my N64 with Perfect Dark (one of my favourite games ever) as I needed the money. I don't think I even lasted two months before I went out and bought another N64 with PD; I missed it so much. Even though I've not played with my N64 in over a year, I doubt I'd ever sell it again as I know I'd just go and buy one again later on :P
The only other games I owned on N64 were Golden Eye and Conker's Bad Fur Day. The N64 really was lacking in decent games tbh...

Yeah, because owning everything on an emulator is something to be proud of.

And Uber, do you mean Rogue Squadron?

I hope you dont mean Shadows of the Empire. NO ONE wants to play as Dash Rendar..

And i wouldnt say it was lacking in decent games! Two of the greatests FPSs ever, 3 of the greatest platformers ever, and the greatest game of all time.

I don't own one of these. And I'm still deciding between a n64 or a DC to buy first.

But when I do,

-Battle For Naboo.
-Conker's BFD
-Turok
-Mario (and related games, Tennis FTW)

I've got that Epidsode 1 Racer, The Ocarina Of Time,Banjo Kazooie and Turok II around my place somewhere.

I just need my N64 Power chord now and I think I may have to stop playing my 360 for a little bit...

I never ever played on an N64. My friend had one and it sat there on a pile of junk while we played his Dreamcast. To be honest, the N64 never even made me want to play it. I took one look at it, thought it looked odd, and returned my attention to Crazy Taxi.

But now I so wish I had played it. I missed out on a lot of great games and gaming platforms when I was young. I never had a Sega Mega Drive, Master System, PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PS2 or XBox.

The first proper games console I ever got was a PSP (or PS3 if the PSP ain't counted), and believe me, it sucks when you're playing something like MGS 4 and you have no idea what they're on about cause you never played the others. Still a good game, but I'm sure I could have gotten more out of it.

The only gaming I did while younger was when I purposely invited myself to friends places to play theirs. I was an unfortunate child.

Has ANYONE heard of Virtual Console?!
Play old games on a shiny new system, plus, your monies are going to the developers, not some kid in who just found PD in his attic and wants some cash.
