The lure of television

It's been a while now. I've lived without TV for a few years. That's not to say I don't watch movies, or catch up with some of my favourite programmes on DVD, but lately I've wanted even more than that. I've been spending a lot more time on YouTube and looking for snippets of cool stuff on TVNZ On Demand.

It's all great stuff, so why not just get TV in my home? I won't deny I went through a phase. TV was all garbage. I didn't want a bar of it: the advertising, the packaging of culture, the way it sucks your life away. I had Saturn for a while (no, not that kind) but found that I only really picked it up becuase it came with a phone/internet/TV package deal. I never watched it, so it went. And I never bothered hooking up any terrestrial aerial. No harm, no foul.

But, oh! I miss it! Now, TV is such a delicious treat, whenever I get near one I can't help tuning out everyone around me. Even the patchy delights of TVNZ are enough. Montana Sunday Theatre? Gold! Off the Radar? Gimme more! It's starting to worry me a bit.

I work in a job where the media is very important. Can I justify it that way perhaps? I spend much of my day hooked into social media, as well as radio, multiple newspapers and from time to time, video content on sites like TVNZ On Demand that stream Kiwi TV content. Maybe I should just jump back on the bandwagon full time? But you see... it's only an excuse.

I'm pretty sure I'll never be required to watch Outrageous Fortune for work, but that's what I'll be doing. Antiques Roadshow? How will I justify that one? And as for how it will eat into my reading time, my rocking of the ubersexiness that is the clawhammer banjo, and my - yes - my gaming?

At the end of all of this, I had hoped to convince myself either way... but no. Alas. Counfound it. Damn it all to HD hell.

Is it just me, or is online TV in NZ pathetic?

The only thing that I thought was half-done well was TVNZ's online Olympic coverage, which I took a look at from time to time.

What would be the issue with provide online streams of the TV shows? Keep the adverts in if you're worried about the loss of advertising revenue. Bandwidth? Supplying bandwidth nationally costs next to nill, so block users from outisde NZ.

I know I'd watch it - especially if they could offer the feature to go back and watch past episodes whenever you wanted.

If I didn't have Sky Digital at my place I'm sure I'd hardly watch television.

I'd prefer to download my own episodes and watch them when I like. TV suckors, even with Sky.

I only have two regular shows - Chuck and Criminal Minds.
Chuck is light humor, easy to watch and follow.
Criminal Minds is just plain motherfucking awesome. It's interesting and each episode is quality, unlike CSI and the rest.

I also love Scrubs, but they're usually re-runs.
