A while back I walked into a Wellington clothing shop in Cuba Mall. Those of you who are local will be well aware of the kinds of shops that populate this spit of red-brick and celebrity toilets, and those of you who aren't, I'mma go ahead and explain it as best I can in just one word: trendy. For good or ill, read it how you like: trendy.
The trendiness of Wellington clothing shops is probably a blog all of its own, but I'm not going to write the mongrel. This one's about the magazines that were available next to copies of the Package and flyers for funk bands on the concrete floor of this place. It was called Vice Magazine. And I grabbed one.
The magazine is genius. I'm not too sure if it still gets distributed, but I haven't seen it in a while. I started swinging by this shop every month so I could snoop for a new issue, and I wasn't disappointed for six, but then it stopped being available. The painfully hot girl behind the counter wasn't able to tell me if more were coming in.
One day, I googled the title, after spending an afternoon flicking through the well-read copies I had, which included two special isses - the Photo issue and Vice Story Awards issue. I was stoked when I came across the Vice website, Viceland.
Since discovering the site, I have sunk a powerful chunk of hours into it. Now I don't pesume that those out you reading this don't know a few fab sites of your own, but if you've never heard of this one, surf along and see what you reckon.
Do's and Dont's are a favourite, with colourful characters like the one pictured abounding. Clever captions by the acerbic staff assert whether the person pictured is a Do or a Don't based on what they're wearing or doing. Be prepared to clean your monitor if you choose to imbibe any kind of liquid while reading.
VBS TV is also a great resource for rainy weekends when that trip to the video shop seems too much to handle. Catch docos galore and plenty of random, crazy stuff here, including rapping rednecks, the 'Toxic' series and the skateboard show Epicly Later'd.
Now, kids, there is a bit of content on this that might be considered R18 - war photography and topless women being about the worst of it - so let me just put a big old disclaimer on here and say that if you're under said age and rock along to see what's what and start having nightmares or brain-draining chubbies, that ain't my lookout.
Casual racism and hardcore racism aside (anywhere there's comments allowed, there's dumbasses) Viceland is a great place to while away some of those pesky hours between here and the grave.
