This story broke a while ago, but the Dominion Post reported it yesterday, and that's how I came to get rather excited about the prospect of a man-ape new to science. Could I find anyone in my place of work to agree with how cool this was? No.
I never said I believed it all to be true, only that I wanted it to be so. Badly. I have always been interested in the supernatural and unexplained, and bigfoot slots nicely into that second category. You'll struggle to find a book published on the unexplained that doesn't have a creature section including Bigfoot. Now, these jokers in Georgia (banjo country, sure) have found this thing they claim is the corpse of this ever elusive hairy man-beast.
My argument ran along the same lines as Tycho Brahe's Wolfman rationale and so I thought it was pretty watertight. Penny Arcade has, after all, more than one lesson to teach us. But still, out of the handful of people I even got interested in the topic, no one gave it an ounce of credibility. What the hell has happened to the world?
The conversation naturally developed into one about conspiracies and other hoaxes, and the moon landing came up, as well as 9/11 (still a touchy subject). A couple of my colleagues believed that both of these things were set-ups. Now, to my mind, that kind of out-of-the-box thinking is the same thing one needs to apply to 'new evidence' about Bigfoot.
And aside from anyone believing it, what about wanting to believe it? Like me? Nope. It was a lonely day at the office, I can tell you.
There's supposed to be a press conference today (the 15th in the States) where they're going to present more evidence other than the sketchy photos you can see attached to the link above at the BBC website. I'm going to try and find it on line, live or not, because I can't put this thing to rest.
